I start with a patient-centred approach to gather as much information as possible, before the patient and I, through the therapeutic alliance, determine appropriate next steps, which can include approaches from various modalities, including cognitive behaviour therapy, exposure techniques, and sometimes incorporating mindfulness. I’m convinced that the complete approach to mental health treatment involves a biopsychosocial model. In this model, considerations about lifestyle factors that might not necessarily seem to be relevant to mental health — e.g., diet, exercise, meditation, sleep, social support, purposeful work/hobbies, etc. — are brimming with potential for positive emotional growth in a patient’s life. It seems to me that acknowledging these factors should be a key complement to more traditional counselling and psychotherapy techniques.
I use a healthcare-compliant virtual clinic so that our online sessions are as secure as our in-person sessions would be. I am also available in person and remotely via the following physiotherapy clinic in Toronto: https://physiohealthstudios.com/services/psychotherapy/.
